Prof. Hans D. Ochs Bio : Prof. Hans D. Ochs

Hans D. Ochs, MD

Professor of Pediatrics, University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital, is co-director of the Immunodeficiency Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory. He earned his MD summa cum laude from the University of Freiburg, Germany in 1961. After a post-doctoral fellowship in Biochemistry at the University of Tübingen, he completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in Immunology at the University of Washington.

Dr. Ochs' research focuses on the molecular basis of Primary Immune Deficiency Diseases with special interest in the genes that have been linked to the Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome, Hyper IgM syndromes, X-linked Agammaglobulinemia, IPEX syndrome, autosomal recessive Hyper IgE syndrome. To improve the long-term outcome of these disorders, he has actively participated in clinical trials to develop immunoglobulin replacement, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and gene therapy.

Dr. Ochs started the Immunodeficiency Clinic in 1985 at Seattle Children’s Hospital, providing evaluation and care for both pediatric and adult patients with immunodeficiency disorders. He has initiated clinical trials for new immunoglobulin preparations for intravenous and subcutaneous infusions and has collaborated with the bone marrow transplant team at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute in the design of new protocols for hematopoietic stem cell transplant and gene therapy. Dr. Ochs has been the founding principal investigator for the U.S. Immune Deficiency Network (USIDnet) and co-founder and member of the summer school faculty devoted to primary immune deficiencies. He is also principal editor for the medical textbook Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases: A Molecular and Genetic Approach, now in its 3rd edition and co-editor for Stiehm’s Immunological Disorders in Infants and Children. Together with Amos Etzioni, he edited the recently published text “Primary Immunodeficiency Disorders: a Historic and Scientific Perspective.
